Below, the eye moves shelf to shelf: a Roman-numeral pocket watch, an apothecary bottle, a bell jar with a small skull, a moth pinned under PAPILIO NOCTIS, a brass armillary sphere, a wax-sealed scroll, spines of stacked books, and a large ornate key holding the centre against deep crimson. Gold linework, skull finials and scrollwork frame the whole panel, while the black ground gives every gilded detail somewhere to breathe. Nothing shouts. Everything rewards a second look.
